Your game should not stop just because the ping pong ball has slightly been dented. There are several ways you can bring it back to shape and continue using it. The ball can only get back to its shape if it has only deflated without cracking in such a way that it allows free flow of air in and out. To fix the dented ping pong ball, follow any of the following ways.
1. Using hot water
This is an easy way of fixing your ping pong ball that has been dented. The dented ball contains some air inside and heat forces it to expand. The expansion of the air inside forces the ball to come back to its shape and this is how the hot water works. The hot water can work better if it is boiling.
To go on with this method, boil a little amount of water. The water needs to be about a cup full. Pour the boiling water into a wide cup and then place the ball inside. You can also place the ball inside your boiling equipment but be sure to quickly retrieve it immediately it regains its shape. Leaving it in the boiling water for long could actually melt it and that is not what you want.
You can either leave the ping pong ball floating on top of the hot water or just deep it inside using a spoon or any other applicable equipment. The ball inflates quickly and could be ready for retrieval in about 20 seconds. Retrieve it using a spoon or tongs and then place it at the center of a well-laid handkerchief or any other piece of cloth. Hold the four corners of the handkerchief and lift it up, with the ball hanging from inside. Hang it on a cloth line and let it dry naturally for around 10 minutes. Drying the ball on a flat surface is not advisable as this would make the ball slump and create a flat surface at its base.
2. The hair dryer
Remember that the dented ping pong ball regains its shape through the expansion of the air inside it. A hair dryer can help in this too. The hair dryer is good because you can heat the ball periodically and help avoid any deformities.
To successfully inflate the dented ball, adjust your hair dryer to its hot setting. Hold the ball in the palm of your hand with its dented side facing up. Blow it directly with the blow dryer and keep a distance of about 15 to 20 cm between the dryer and the ball. Different blow dryers come with varying temperatures and you can adjust the distance depending on the heat produced. The flowing hot air should not be too much for your hand.
Blow the ball until it regains its shape. You can take some breaks when blowing so as to avoid any deformities. You can place the ball inside a sagging handkerchief and hang it on a cloth line for it to dry after the expansion. This is optional but can prevent any unwanted misshapes.
3. Using the flame of a lighter
The flame of a lighter can also be used in heating and expanding the air inside a ping pong ball. This will result to the inflation of your dented ball. This method requires your keenness and concern as it can easily melt the ball.
To fix a dented ping pong ball using a lighter flame, get a reliable lighter that produces a small but enough flame. A candle can also be used in this case. Pass the naked lighter flame over the ball slowly and severally. Be sure to not expose the ball too much to the flame as it can easily melt. It takes a short time for the ball to expand and gain back its shape.
After the ball regains its shape, put it inside a hanging handkerchief and let it cool slowly and naturally. The handkerchief should be hanging using its four corners and allowing the ball to lie inside its sagging center. After cooling, the ball will be good and ready for use.
However, be careful and protect yourself!
Fixing your dented ping pong ball should now be easy with the above methods. A fixed ball may not be as good as a new one but can be useful for a good period of time. You do not have to just throw away a dented ball. Fix it and let it serve you for more days.
